VipKid claims that if you join their platform as a teacher, you can earn $14 to $22 per hour by teaching English online.
No matter what the VipKid claims, I must appreciate you for taking your time to find the truth about this company.
I’m not connected with VipKid in any form. Instead, I’m here to reveal the truth behind this platform and what it can really provide for you.
Is it really that easy for VipKid to fulfill its promises? Is it worth your time? And most importantly, is VipKid a scam or a legit platform?
That’s all I will be covering in this review.
So let’s start;

Summary: VIPKID is English as a second language (ESL) platform which connects teachers and Chinese students who are 4 to 12 years age. As per the site stats, it has over 60,000 teachers and 500,000 students. It is one-on-one full immersion language and content classes based on the US Common Core State Standards.
The platform has strict requirements to enroll teachers and offer too little for the teacher’s efforts. But it is an earning opportunity from people who want to work in the comfort of their home.

What is VipKid?
Cindy Mi and Jessie Chen started it in 2013, and it’s headquarter is located in Beijing.
Over the years the platform has grown rapidly and attracted major investors around the world, including Kobe Bryant!
VipKid is a platform that pays ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers to teach children in China between the ages 4-12. Their entire curriculum is based on the U.S.
It is one-on-one teaching style where you are directly teaching to only one student. The class usually last for 30 minutes, including 25 minutes for lecture and 5 minutes for Q/A session.
The class uses a Common Core State Standards and a flipped-classroom approach to foster creativity and critical thinking skills.
VipKid Teacher Requirements
To become a teacher, you must meet their basic requirements. Their customers trust VipKid for providing quality in teaching and if you don’t possess the following requirement, don’t bother to apply;
- Bachelor’s degree is a must requirement. However, they haven’t specified any field, so if you have a bachelor degree in any field, you are good to go.
- You must be a native English speaker.
- Once enrolled, you have to sign a minimum of 6-months contract.
Here are the tech requirements:
- You need to have a desktop, laptop, MAC, or Surface
- Your system must be Intel Core i3, or above, RAM of 4GB or above and have a Windows 7 or above
- Your internet connection must be wired DSL having a speed of at least 20 Mbps.
- Your computer needs to have an HD External camera or HD integrated camera
- You need a good headset with a microphone.

VipKid Application Process
Once you have met the above requirements, here are the steps to follow;
1. Fill out an application
Send your resume to the VipKid via their website and they will evaluate you.
2. Online meeting with a recruiter and small test
There are two ways you can do this either by booking an interview or recording an interview.
- Book an interview – You will be invited for a 30-minute session where you need to demo in front of VipKid recruiter.
- Record an interview – You can record your own demo lesson at your convenience so that a VipKid recruiter can evaluate you. There are certain directions that you should follow to record this.
3. Sign a contract and provide additional documentation
If they select you, you’ll be asked to sign your initial contract, provide additional documentation, and then pass a background check.
How Much Does VipKid Pay?
Your payment is determined on a per-class basis which usually lasts for 30-minutes. You pay composed on two components; minimum pay between $7-9 and incentives.
Your minimum pay or base pay will be determined by your demo class performance which you delivered at the interview stage, while incentives by your monthly class participation and completion as a VipKid teacher.

Teachers are paid through direct deposits into their bank accounts between the 10th and 15th of each month.
Teachers contact will last for six months, and they are reevaluated for salary raise after that period.

Pros & Cons:
The Good
1. Flexible Work from Home Opportunity
You can work from home and don’t require traveling long distances. It’s also fun to meet sweet children. Have fun! Laugh every day.
Though you may not get booked in your first month if you stay there, then every month will be getting better and better.
The Bad
1. Not BBB Accredited
VipKid hadn’t any profile with the BBB nor accredited with the BBB. This makes difficult to decide how the Company is handling consumer complaints or troubleshooting issues.
There is also very little feedback from past customers available online, so it gets tough for newbies to decide whether they should join it or not.
Most of the people reviews are written to sell the people, and they usually hide serious issues. That’s where the platforms like BBB come in.
2. Technical Issues
You do consider this issue on a regular basis. If you can’t connect, you can’t teach and therefore no money earned.
The issue can be arising on either side. Though it isn’t under your control, I recommend you should have some backup plans. Even there are sometimes system errors that are blamed on teachers.
3. Very Little Growth
You shouldn’t expect too much from this company regarding monetary rewards and career development.
Most of the teachers are complaining about staying at the same position and the same rate as they started this company.
Though they have created a raise policy on the books, they have made it extremely tough that practically nobody qualifies.
4. Wait Months to Get Bookings
There are too many teachers, and now it is getting tougher for them to earn a decent income from this platform.
VipKid has shared the tips to get booked as early as possible still the problem is getting bigger and bigger.
Teachers are encouraged to attend workshops but, though it is interesting, only workshops cannot bring you new bookings. There must be new students to be brought in this system.
5. Early Hours or Late Hours
There is a time difference between U.S and China so it can be difficult to teach a class at 6 AM.
Those who want to make it an extra income per month but due to restricted schedule it makes it difficult for them to earn a good income.
6. Difficult Students
In teaching, you have to face different faces. Though the majority of classes have excellent students, still there are times where you find difficult students who may not listen, etc.
That’s normal in teaching profession but will be harder in an ESL environment.
7. Miscommunication
As the whole concept is web-based, you should be ready for miscommunications at times.
Even some teachers have faced this issue. It is a new and rapidly expanding company so we should believe they are trying to do their best.
8. Ratings
Every job requires seeing how one is performing their duties. They have set up a system where parents or students rate their teachers from 1-5.
Five being the best but if your cumulative ratings reached to below 3 or parent complaints can cause VIPKID to review your contract.
9. Limited Earning Potential
Despite the time and effort, you put in VIPKID platform, at the end you only have few bucks in your hand.
That’s true….
Though VIPKID is one of the trusted ESL sites on the web, still this issue is with it.
You can get a paycheck of $150 to $225 per month. Even for that $150 to $225, you need to spend 3 to 4 hours daily. That’s a lot of work.
If you think VipKid can earn you a big income each month, believe me, that’s not going to happen.
You halve to work for peak hours to earn a part-time income, and they are enrolling newly teachers on a daily basis.
However, the student’s strength is not increasing much. That’s why many of the teachers are just waiting for their luck.
Is VipKid a Scam?
VipKid is not a scam because it is still legitimate English as a second language (ESL) teaching portal that provides teachers a good income opportunity from home.
Though there are issues with this company that I have disclosed above, I want to make a try to see the results yourself.
You can get the book early and start earnings, but my believe you can only use it as a part-time income.
Even some of the teachers couldn’t find any booking at all, and some have got their contracts terminated due to low ratings.
There are better options out there than VipKid when it comes to making money online.
Want to Earn a Full-time Income From Home?
Final Verdict:
Though VipKid is a legit company, I recommend you to put your focus on your own online business rather than earning $150 to $225 per month.
Affiliate marketing is one sort of such a business model that I recommend to make money online.
The reasons are simple…
- It has far more earning potential than VipKid
- Unlike VipKid, you don’t have to undergo difficult interviewing steps
- It gives you control and ownership that VipKid doesn’t
- You have the freedom to work flexibly from home without having to face timing issues
- It’s Free to get started
Don’t put so much effort on VipKid and other similar businesses.
Let’s suppose, if the VipKid gets closed or terminate their contract, all of your efforts will get wasted, and you need to start again from zero.
If you know affiliate marketing, then you don’t need to be worried about any company.
